Patsy Takemoto Mink Free Online Research Papers Patsy Takemoto Mink was the first colored women in congress. This position obviously did not come easily to her, rather with a bunch of struggle and motivation in order to accomplish her goals. She was a Japanese American, strong and willed, representing the Democratic Party. She served in the U.S House of Representatives for a total of 12 terms, representing Hawaii’s first and second congressional districts. During her time in congress she authorized the Title IX Amendment of the Higher Education Act, which was later named The Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act, after her death in 2002 due to pneumonia. The experiences that Patsy faced, are very similar to the ones discussed in class. Due to WWll, Takemoto was not favored in high school for student body president, since many were uncomfortable with anything Japanese related. Mink was very unique, since many people faced these racial segregation issues, however did not have as much strength as her to fight it. After graduating from Nebraska University, she moved back to Honolulu to prepa re for medical school, but to her dismay she was not accepted to the 20 schools she applied to due to being a women. She realized then that the only way to get women accepted to medical school would be through the judiciary process; taking her life on a turn, and encouraging Patsy to attend Law school at the University of Chicago. Many teachers underestimate the value of building relationships with their students’ parents. Parents can be your best friends, and they can be your worst enemy. It is hard work for a teacher to build trusting cooperative relationships, but it will be well worth all the effort in the long run. The following five tips can help teachers build solid relationships with the parents of the students they serve. Build Their Trust Building a parent’s trust is often a gradual process. First of all, parents need to ensure that you have their child’s best interest at heart. Proving this to some parents can be challenging, but it isn’t impossible. The first step to building their trust is simply letting them know you on a more personal level. There are obviously personal details that you don’t want to give to parents, but don’t be afraid to talk casually with them about hobbies or interest outside of school. Don’t be afraid to go the extra mile to help a student. This can win trust and respect faster than anything. Being defensive makes it seem as though you have something to hide. Instead of being defensive listen to everything they have to say before you react. If they have a valid concern, assure them that you will take care of it. If you made a mistake, admit it, apologize for it, and tell them how you plan to remedy it. Most of the time a parent’s questions or concerns come down to miscommunication or misconceptions. Don’t be afraid to clear up any issues, but do so in a tone that is calm and in a manner which is professional. Listening to them is just as powerful as explaining your side. You will find more times than not that the frustration is not with you, but instead with their child and that they simply need to vent. Communicate Often Effective communication can be time-consuming, but it is crucial. There are many ways to communicate these days. Notes, newsletters, daily folders, phone calls, emails, visitations, open room nights, class web pages, postcards, and parent-teacher conferences are some of the most popular means in which to communicate. An effective teacher will likely use several means over the course of the year. Good teachers communicate frequently. If a parent hears it from you, there is a lesser chance of something getting misinterpreted in the process. Schizophrenia and the I-function: A Hypothesis Revised In my second web paper, I tried to come up with arguments supporting the hypothesis that schizophrenia was caused by an overactive I-function. Information about positive schizophrenic symptoms (distorted perceptions of reality, hallucinations, illusions, delusions, paranoia...)(2) suggested to me that the I-function of the schizophrenic was aware of things that the I-function of the non-schizophrenic wasn't. I also felt that because reality is such a biased, individual experience, non-schizophrenics do not have the right to label the reality of the schizophrenic as false. This hypothesis is flawed. After doing more research and taking into consideration a suggestion from Professor Grobstein that maybe the problem is not an overactive I-function, but abnormal input to the I-function, I have reworked the hypothesis. One can still validly say that the reality of the schizophrenic is real. However, it is more accurate to emphasize that the reality of a schizophrenic is only real to the schizophrenic, just as each and every person's individual reality is actually only real to him or her. The difference between the realities of schizophrenics and the realities of non-schizophrenics is that for non-schizophrenics, information is processed in a more or less uniform way. That is, I interpret input pretty much the same way most people around me would. There are, of course, discrepancies in interpretations even between non-schizophrenics, hence the difficulty in relying on eye-witness accounts. For schizophrenics, though, the interpretation of input is completely different from everyone e lse around them due to the fact that the input is in some way wildly changed between the time it reaches the afferent nerve endings to the time that it ends up at the I-function. I found that an excellent way to begin to understand how schizophrenia works is by reading personal accounts. Most of the accounts I found were written by people who, with the help of medication, were in recovery from schizophrenia. The company may perceive a big business opportunity in doing this and decide to set up a network on foreign shores. Whichever the reason, once an office is set up overseas, this typically means that management and staff from the head office or flagship have to interact on a regular basis with local staff in the new countries. And if the business opens up in more than one country, it has to deal with multi cultural staff and or customers – a situation that calls for adroit handling of culture sensitive communications so that all business activities like decision-making and problem-solving take place without any gaps and in a way that is best suited to business needs. Similarly, the Danish were impatient with Japan’s ceremonial approach to business; they just wanted to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible without partaking in social obligations. . How do these challenges affect an individual’s performance and effectiveness? Clear and lucid communication of business goals and corporate expectations of how staff can help achieve business goals is critical to the successful running of any business. Ineffective communication can lead to a lack of understanding of what is expected of a person in the company and how he or she should contribute towards achieving the business objectives. Many times a feeling of apathy sets in when staff feel left out and consequently their performance suffers, hurting the company’s business performance as well. When Jesus Ricardo was sent on a two year assignment from North America to South East Asia, she was one unhappy expat. It started with the very basics – her name; none of the people she worked with could say it right. It was simply a matter of her co-workers not being aware that in Spanish, the ‘J’ is pronounced like an ‘H’. She ended up having to explain this repeatedly and correct every person she met. This annoyed her tremendously although the locals did not think much of it. They did not understand that where Jesus came from, it was important to pronounce one’s name correctly. Then in the office, Jesus found her colleagues (all local), always spoke in Chinese. She felt terribly left out and sometimes even ignored. Often she wondered if they were talking about her, especially when the conversation was peppered with giggles. She consequently made no effort to get to know her team mates and insulated herself in her own world. At the end of three such trying months, she decided to quit her job if her company did not move her back to N America. Could the company have avoided such a situation? Yes, if it had been better prepared to handle a diverse workforce. As part of the relocation exercise, the company should have put both Jesus and the team in Taiwan through cross cultural sensitization. The host team should have been given a detailed briefing about the new member from N America and a ‘buddy’ could have been arranged to soft land Jesus into a completely new culture and living. How do these communication challenges affect the business objectives of the company? A person’s behavior – his attitudes, his beliefs, life style, his thinking, and his responsiveness are all influenced by his cultural background and markers. As companies start to do business with other countries, it becomes evident that there is a compelling need to understand local culture and habits. To persuade people to contribute fruitfully to business objectives, it is important to establish credibility and trust. Managers in the future Essay

I believe that planning will always be important to a manager. If the importance were to become more or less important, I would say that it is going to become more important. Planning is when an organization defines their goals, establishes strategies for achieving those goals, and developing plans to integrate and coordinate work activities (Robbins & Coulter, 2014). Planning is always needed because of the way things are constantly changing. An organization isn’t necessarily always changing, but the world is and then can affect an organization, so a company better be prepared. In the textbook, it says that managers should plan to provide direction, reduce uncertainty, minimizes waste and redundancy, and establishes the goals or standards used in controlling. This is extremely important in the planning process because it can help an organization in being successful. Providing directions in the planning process is very important because it helps build the foundation of how things will be done. Without directions, an organization would be a disaster because everyone would want to do things their own way causing confusion if people had to work together because there would be completely different methods. To me, providing directions is related to reducing the uncertainty in an organization. If there were uncertainties going on within the organization, then things probably would not happen due to confusion. Costs would be so high if planning wasn’t done to minimize waste and redundancy. If there is not a plan prepared on who was to do what, then an organization would be producing multiples of products causing the price spent on production and materials to be doubled. In plans, you want to have goals prepared. This gives people incentives to want to achieve a goal to succeed and possible advance in time. Standards are good to have so workers know what is expected of them. I have worked at a retirement for the last 5 years and an example of when my  managers use planning is when an expected storm is coming. The managers need to have a plan of what to do in case of a problem, such as a power outage. If there was no plan planned for a disaster like that, there would be serious issues do to the residents needing oxygen or motorized wheelchairs that need to be charged by a power source. How a Freelance Writers Promotes Their Name A while back, I created a post titled How to Further Your Writing Name. The feedback was pretty positive, but one reader replied, Good article! A similar article from you is to write the same for nonfiction freelancers. It would be very helpful. So if you are a freelance writer, here is a list of how you can promote yourself and your brand. To start with, its simple. Each and every single day you promote yourself. For instance: 1) Write a guest blog post and pitch it. Any nonfiction article youve written makes you a semi-expert on the topic. The 2) Leave deep, well-written, intelligent replies on other blogs demonstrating who you are and how personable you are. This works for any sort of writer. 3) Post on social media something related to your brand or writing. Make your social media page as good or better than your website, where people come to get a taste of your expertise and personality. 4) Find mentors on social media and connect with a post. 5) Create a small book with a collection of the articles youve written as a sort of resume. 6) Connect with a local bookstore with above-said book and speak. 7) Connect with a library and speak about being a freelancer, or a topic on which youve written. 8) Attend a library event then introduce yourself to the speaker while gathering intel for new articles. 9) Join the Chamber of Commerce and send them an ad. 10) Attend a Chamber event and give out your card or above-mentioned book. Chambers have many members who need freelance material and prefer to remain in the fold of membership to do business. 11) Start a biweekly or monthly newsletter about the niche in which you write. 12) Create an email signature block about your writing. 13) Write a feature for the local paper. 14) Speak at the area service organization breakfasts and lunches (Rotary Club, Lions Club, Civitan Club, etc.) 15) Write a feature and pitch it to a local magazine. 16) Attend all sorts of events in your area to see if they can joggle ideas for stories, but most of all, meet the people there. Ask questions of the speakers or experts present, introducing yourself. 17) Send letters to your politicians, telling them what you admire about their platform or recent stance, and let them know youd be happy to write for them or about them. 18) Start a podcast about being a freelance writer. Clearly note your brand whether it be sassy, uplifting,   educational, or investigative. 19) Write reviews for nonfiction authors, emailing them with a copy of the review, your card, and a thank-you for writing the book. 20) Become familiar with the other freelancers in your area. They will refer material to you. 21) Never leave home without your business cards. Give one out per day. 22) Ask a school if you can make a presentation. Dont forget colleges. 23) Contact your local community center and ask about making a presentation. 24) Send postcards to your community make them simple and professional. Few freelancers think of this, which means they are putting themselves into everyones head as the only freelancer they knowwhich means recommendations. 25) Send a press release to your local television station  to the specific journalist who does human interest pieces about the most amazing story youve ever covered. The go-to story you love to tell. 26) Be seen writing. 27) Write Freelance author in any place that asks for your profession. 28) Tell someone you are a freelance writer and have snappy and colorful answers for those standard questions of What do you write?, Where can I read your work?, and How can I do what you do, too? Do not waffle. Own being an expert. 29) Focus on becoming known as the writer who sees all, or promotes the positive, or loves his hometown/state, or some other brand/niche so that you are easily memorable. 30) Create striking cards. Never go with a standard Vistaprint template. Spend the extra money on something memorable. 31) Never meet anyone without letting them know who you are and what you dowith a card. Keep a calendar. Each day you promote yourself in any way, cross it off with a big red X. Be honest. And when you dont, leave it blatantly blank. Develop the habit of self-promotion. The point is to become that person everyone recognizes as that writer, not just someone who sometimes writes.

Additionally, they will also be able to determine which geographic region they are performing best and worst in. The situation in Sudan is a complicated one, and one that will not easily be solved. Throughout the course of the years of violence, the situation has impacted the lives of millions of Darfurians. So far, "The ongoing devastation has killed an estimated 400,000 and displaced over 2.5 million Sudanese since February 2003", and the wide spread course of destruction is only going to continue unless someone steps in and takes action (Darfur, 2007). Just these facts only warrant intervention on the basis of humanitarian need, but these numbers alone are not the only reasons the United States should get involved in Darfur. In fact, the United States should have gotten involved in Darfur a long time ago, but still has decided to leave innocent people to die at the hands of a violent government. What kind of government do we have that can keep its blind eye turned for so long on the horrible actions of another government The United States needs to take immediate action to stop these atrocit ies from continuing to happen in Darfur, and stop more innocent lives from being shed for pointless reasons. The United States Department of State has given even higher numbers than the conservative estimates by the refugee agencies. The Department of States has released numbers showing that "4 million people have been displaced from Southern Sudan, with a total of 6 million displaced from the whole country, there are a estimated 220,000 refugees from Sudan currently living in Chad, 358,000 in other neighboring countries, and 170,000 refugees from other countries that are seeking home in Sudan" ( (U.S. Department of State, 2007). Many of these numbers could have been avoided if the United States has moved in to help Sudan, hypothetically speaking, instead of throwing ourselves into the quagmire that is Iraq. Or even if the United States has begun to put pressure on the Sudanese government earlier, we could see much lower death tolls coming out of the century's first genocide. Beside just the immediate effects of the genocide, if one were to look at the far reaching effects, one could find another reason the United States should step up and help Darfur. Another area of Darfur that has been affected is the education of the children. Once the warfare finally does stop, Darfur is going to need help in rebuilding and reeducating its children. Sudan has the lowest access to primary education in the world (UNICEF, 2005). Ninety-nine percent of women in Southern Sudan are illiterate and only seven percent of all teachers teaching Southern Sudan are trained to be teachers (UNICEF, 2005). As if those numbers are bad enough, only ten percent of girls ages 7-14 attend school, and fewer than one percent of girls complete primary education (UNICEF, 2005). Also, only Afghanistan under the Taliban had fewer girls graduating from primary schools than the few number of girls that are graduating from Sudanese schools today. The horrible things that are happening in Darfur are only going to have the ripple effect, and have a horrible effect on the generations to come.
